Where to Stay in Siargao: Best Areas for First-Time Visitors

Where to Stay in Siargao: Best Areas for First-Time Visitors

Choosing where to stay in Siargao can make a big difference to your trip.

The island is much bigger than many first-time visitors expect, and staying in General Luna feels very different from spending your nights in quiet Malinao or on the northern coast around Pacifico.

For most first-time visitors, General Luna is the easiest choice. But surfers, couples, long-stay travelers, and visitors looking for a quieter island experience may prefer somewhere else.

Here is a practical guide to choosing the best area to stay in Siargao.

Where to Stay in Siargao: General Luna for First-Time Visitors

Where to stay in Siargao near motorbike rentals

If this is your first trip to Siargao, General Luna is usually the safest and most convenient choice.

It has the island’s largest concentration of restaurants, cafés, bars, hostels, hotels, surf services, motorbike rentals, and tour operators.

For travelers staying only three or four days, this convenience matters. You can spend less time organizing transportation and more time enjoying the island.

General Luna is also a good base for island-hopping tours and exploring the rest of Siargao.

The downside is that it is the busiest part of the island. If your idea of Siargao is complete silence and an empty beach outside your room, there may be better options.

Best for:
First-time visitors
Short trips
Food and nightlife
Travelers without their own transportation
People who want everything nearby

Catangnan and Cloud 9: Best for Surf Access

Catangnan and the Cloud 9 area are particularly convenient for travelers who came to Siargao to surf.

Cloud 9 is Siargao’s most famous surf break, but beginners should understand that Cloud 9 itself is generally an advanced wave.

Fortunately, Jacking Horse is located at the northern end of the Cloud 9 beach area and is one of the island’s best-known beginner surf spots.

This makes the wider Cloud 9 and Catangnan area a convenient base for people taking their first surf lessons as well as more experienced surfers.

There are also plenty of accommodations, cafés, restaurants, surf schools, and board rentals around this part of Siargao.

General Luna’s main restaurant and nightlife areas are still easily accessible.

Best for:
Surfers
Beginner surfers taking lessons
Travelers who want to stay near Cloud 9
People who still want easy access to General Luna

Malinao: Best for a Quieter Stay Near General Luna

Malinao is a good compromise for travelers who want peace and quiet without staying too far from General Luna.

It is noticeably less busy than the central GL and Catangnan areas, and you can find everything from hostels to higher-end resorts around this part of the island.

For couples or travelers who prefer quieter evenings, Malinao can be a better place to return to after spending the day exploring Siargao.

One of its biggest advantages is location.

From many parts of Malinao, General Luna is roughly a 10-minute motorbike ride away, depending on exactly where you are staying and traffic conditions.

This means you can enjoy the restaurants and activity of GL without necessarily sleeping in the busiest part of town.

Secret Beach is also in the Malinao area, adding another reason to consider staying here.

Best for:
Couples
Quiet stays
Travelers with a motorbike
Visitors who want to remain close to General Luna
Travelers looking for resorts and more relaxed accommodation

Pacifico: Best for Surfing and a Slower Siargao

Pacifico offers a completely different experience.

Located on Siargao’s northern coast, it is much farther from General Luna and has a quieter, slower atmosphere.

Pacifico is particularly attractive to travelers who want to spend much of their trip surfing.

The area is known for its surf breaks, and staying nearby means you do not have to make the long ride north from General Luna every time you want to surf there.

In recent years, more hostels, accommodations, cafés, and restaurants have gradually appeared around Pacifico. General Luna has become increasingly developed and expensive, while areas farther north are attracting more businesses and travelers.

However, Pacifico still should not be treated as another General Luna.

It remains much quieter and has fewer choices for restaurants, nightlife, shopping, and tourist services.

That is exactly why some travelers prefer it.

If your ideal Siargao trip is waking up, surfing, eating, relaxing, and surfing again rather than going out every night, Pacifico may suit you better than GL.

Best for:
Surf-focused trips
Longer stays
Travelers who prefer quiet areas
People comfortable riding a motorbike
Visitors who do not need nightlife every evening

General Luna vs Malinao vs Pacifico

For most first-time visitors, choose General Luna.

Choose Catangnan or the Cloud 9 area if surfing is one of the main reasons you are visiting Siargao.

Choose Malinao if you want a quieter place to stay but still want to reach General Luna easily.

Choose Pacifico if you are comfortable being farther away from GL and want a slower trip focused more on surfing and northern Siargao.

There is no single best area for everyone. The right choice depends on how long you are staying and what you actually want to do.

Do You Need a Motorbike?

Your accommodation location becomes much more important if you do not ride a motorbike.

If you stay around General Luna or Catangnan, restaurants and everyday services are relatively easy to access.

Staying in Malinao is also manageable, but having a motorbike makes traveling back and forth to General Luna much easier.

For Pacifico, having your own transportation becomes considerably more useful if you plan to explore other parts of Siargao.

Motorbike rentals in Siargao commonly cost around ₱350 to ₱450 per day. Longer rentals can sometimes work out cheaper per day.

If your hostel or hotel rents motorbikes directly, this can also make pickup and return more convenient.

What About Accommodation Prices?

Siargao has accommodation for very different budgets.

A dormitory bed can start around ₱500 per night, while private rooms at hostels and simple accommodations are often around ₱2,000 to ₱3,000.

Higher-end resorts frequently cost ₱5,000 or more per night, with luxury properties costing considerably more.

Prices vary according to season, location, room type, and availability, so these should be treated as general local price ranges rather than fixed rates.

Our Recommendation for a First Siargao Trip

If you are visiting Siargao for the first time and only have a few days, stay in General Luna or Catangnan.

It keeps things simple.

You will have easy access to food, transportation, tours, surf lessons, Cloud 9, and nightlife without spending too much of a short trip traveling back and forth.

If you return to Siargao for a longer trip, that is when staying in Malinao or spending several nights around Pacifico becomes more interesting.

Siargao is not just General Luna. Where you stay changes the rhythm of the trip, and choosing the right area can make the island feel completely different.
