When is the best time to visit Siargao?
The answer depends on what you want to do.
If you want sunny days, calm water, island hopping and swimming, April is one of my favorite times of the year.
If surfing is the main reason for your trip, September and October can be much more exciting.
And if you are looking for cheaper accommodation and do not mind rain, the wet season from December to February can offer some of the best hotel and hostel deals.
Siargao is different from many other popular destinations in the Philippines, so simply searching for the “dry season in the Philippines” can give you the wrong idea.
Here is what you should know before choosing your travel dates.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Siargao?
For most first-time visitors, I would choose April.
The weather is generally better, the sea can be calmer, and conditions are well suited to the activities many first-time visitors come to Siargao for: beaches, swimming and island hopping.
For surfers, however, I would choose October.
September and October are associated with the stronger surf season, and this is also the period when Siargao’s surfing culture becomes especially visible.
So there really isn’t one “best” month for everyone.
My simple recommendation is:
April – best for a first trip, swimming and island hopping
September–October – best if surfing is your priority
December–February – consider it if lower accommodation prices matter more than predictable weather
Siargao’s Weather Is Different From What Many Tourists Expect
One common mistake is assuming that the weather is the same everywhere in the Philippines.
It isn’t.
Siargao faces the Pacific side of the country, and its rainfall pattern is different from destinations in other parts of the Philippines.
The wettest period is generally around the end of the year and beginning of the next year, particularly from December through February.
January and February can be especially wet.
That is important because many travelers arrive in the Philippines expecting January or February to automatically mean dry, sunny weather.
That may be true for some Philippine destinations, but you should not make that assumption about Siargao.
December to February: Siargao’s Rainy Season
If weather is your biggest priority, December through February would
not be my first choice for a first trip to Siargao.
January and February in particular can bring a lot of rain.
And there is another important point that travelers should understand.
The rain is not always a quick tropical shower followed by sunshine.
There are periods when it can rain for much of the day.
The ocean can also become rougher, and waves can be significantly larger.
That does not mean your entire trip will necessarily be rainy. Tropical weather is never perfectly predictable.
But you should be prepared for a greater chance of disrupted outdoor plans during this period.
Can Island-Hopping Tours Be Cancelled During the Rainy Season?
Yes.
Rain alone does not necessarily stop every tour, but rough seas, strong wind and unfavorable conditions can cause island-hopping and other boat trips to be postponed or cancelled.
This matters if you only have two or three days in Siargao.
If island hopping is one of the main reasons for your visit, having your tour cancelled can remove a large part of your planned itinerary.
During the wetter months, I would avoid making an extremely tight schedule.
Give yourself some flexibility.
The Advantage of Visiting During the Rainy Season
There is one significant advantage: accommodation.
December through February can be a good period to find larger discounts at some accommodations because demand can be lower when the weather is less reliable.
For travelers staying longer, this can make a substantial difference to the total cost of a Siargao trip.
So the rainy season is not necessarily a bad time to visit.
It is simply a different kind of trip.
If you are coming primarily for guaranteed beach weather and island hopping, I would choose another period.
If you are flexible, staying longer and can find a particularly good accommodation deal, the calculation may be different.
March and April: Great Months for First-Time Visitors

March and April are among the periods I like for general sightseeing.
April would be my personal choice for a first visit.
You have a better chance of enjoying the classic Siargao activities that most visitors imagine before arriving: swimming, beaches, exploring the island by motorbike and taking an island-hopping trip.
Calmer sea conditions can also make water activities more comfortable for beginners.
There is a trade-off, however.
This is also around the Philippine summer vacation period, and Holy Week can be particularly busy.
Filipino tourists travel extensively during holidays, so flights, ferries and popular accommodations can become busier.
If your dates overlap with Holy Week, booking accommodation and transportation earlier is a good idea.
April: My Pick for a First Siargao Trip
If a friend asked me to choose one month for their first trip to Siargao, I would probably say April.
The reason is simple.
Most first-time visitors want to do more than surf.
They want to ride around the island, visit beaches, swim, eat around General Luna and join an island-hopping tour.
For that combination of activities, good weather and calmer water are extremely valuable.
It is also a particularly good choice for travelers who are not experienced in the ocean.
Of course, no month guarantees perfect weather every day.
But if I were planning my own general Siargao vacation, April would be one of my first choices.
September and October: Come for the Surf

If surfing is your main purpose, the answer changes.
September and October are an important period in Siargao’s surf calendar, with October being one of my favorite times for surfers.
The island becomes especially interesting when the surf is good.
Siargao’s international surfing competitions have also traditionally brought attention to this period, particularly around the famous Cloud 9 area.
But you do not need to be an advanced surfer to visit during surf season.
You can watch experienced surfers, take beginner lessons at appropriate spots and experience a major part of Siargao’s identity.
Just remember that stronger surf also means beginners need to be more careful about choosing where they enter the water.
October Is More Than Surfing
October can also be an interesting time culturally.
Different barangays hold local fiestas at various times, giving visitors opportunities to experience a side of Siargao that goes beyond beaches and Instagram photos.
Depending on where you are staying and the dates of your visit, you may encounter local celebrations, food, music and community events.
Schedules vary, so ask your accommodation or local residents what is happening while you are on the island.
For me, this combination of surfing and local life makes this period particularly interesting.
What About Northern Siargao During the Wet Season?
The north of the island can offer a very different experience from General Luna.
During periods when the swell is stronger, surfers may explore northern areas and different surf breaks depending on conditions.
Places around Pacifico are popular with travelers who want a quieter, more surf-focused experience.
However, stronger waves are not an invitation for inexperienced surfers to explore unfamiliar breaks alone.
Conditions can change quickly.
If you do not know a surf spot, ask an experienced local surfer or qualified instructor before paddling out.
Best Time for Island Hopping
For island hopping, I prefer the period when the weather is more settled and the sea is calmer.
April is an excellent choice.
The classic island-hopping trips around Siargao usually involve Naked Island, Daku Island and Guyam Island, and good sea conditions make a major difference to the experience.
If island hopping is at the top of your itinerary, I would prioritize weather conditions over saving a little money on accommodation.
Best Time for Budget Travelers
Budget travelers have a different calculation.
If you can tolerate unpredictable weather, December through February may give you opportunities to find discounted rooms.
This works particularly well for travelers who can stay for a longer period.
If it rains one day, you still have time to wait for better conditions.
For someone visiting Siargao for only two or three days, however, I would be much more cautious about choosing the wettest period purely to save money.
A cheap room is not much of a bargain if bad sea conditions cancel the activities you traveled to Siargao to experience.
A Simple Guide to Choosing Your Month
Choose March or April if this is your first Siargao trip and you mainly want beaches, swimming, sightseeing and island hopping.
Choose September or October if surfing is one of the main reasons you are coming.
Consider December through February if accommodation savings are important, you can stay longer and you are comfortable accepting rainy days and possible tour disruptions.
If you only have a short vacation and island hopping is essential, I would avoid deliberately scheduling the trip during the wettest period.
Don’t Trust a Weather App Too Much
One final piece of advice: do not panic if your weather app shows rain every day of your Siargao vacation.
Tropical island forecasts can change.
At the same time, don’t make the opposite mistake of assuming that every rainy forecast means a quick 20-minute shower.
During the wetter part of the year, Siargao can experience prolonged rain.
Check the forecast close to your travel date and ask local tour operators about actual sea conditions before boat trips.
For surfing, ask local instructors about the conditions at the specific surf break you plan to visit.
Final Thoughts
There is no single perfect month to visit Siargao.
The best time depends on the experience you want.
For my own general vacation, I would choose April. The combination of better weather and calmer water makes it particularly suitable for swimming, island hopping and a first experience of Siargao.
If surfing were the priority, I would choose October.
And if keeping accommodation costs low mattered more than having reliable sunshine, I would consider the December-to-February rainy season — but I would arrive knowing that rain can last much longer than a quick tropical shower and that ocean activities may sometimes be cancelled.
Choose the season around what you actually want to do, rather than simply looking for the cheapest flight.
That small decision can completely change your experience of Siargao.
